The Finnish company Limonade has developed a bottle cap that turns water into a soft drink.

The EasySoda screw cap contains carbon dioxide and flavourings, reports the Finnish business daily Kauppalehti.

Limonade bottle caps are available in cola, orange, sparkling water and lemon. More flavours will be introduced to the markets at a later date, together with vitaminised drinks.

Limonade is already negotiating its first export shipment of 14 million bottle caps and it plans to begin exports to 42 countries.

According to Limonade’s CEO Kaj Pelamo, the innovation’s greatest benefit is that it takes up very little room. In addition, the product remains saleable for a year or even longer.

“We will keep our production in Finland. Freight charges are very low since 30 000 caps fit on a palette, compared with, for example, only 1500 normal soft drink bottles. Our product is the most ecological soft drink on the markets,” Pelamo told Kauppalehti.

The company has received support from Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for innovation) for its product development, and the bottle caps are manufactured in the Finnish capital area.
